    > The Artemis II astronauts have surpassed the record for the distance from Earth at 1:56 ET (1756 UTC). This record was previously set during the Apollo 13 mission when the astronauts traveled 248,655 miles from Earth. The Moon continues to grow larger and larger in the windows of the Orion spacecraft as the Artemis II mission gears up to observe the far side. The astronauts are predicted to make their closest approach of the Moon around 7:02pm ET (2302 UTC).

I bawled my eyes out. Such an awesome achievement for this crew and for all of mankind.

    Edit: spelling

Absolutely wonderful. And them crying together and hugging when they spoke about the colleague that passed away. So touching, this whole mission is such an achievement

  4. This is amazing! Could someone explain how come they reached this record even though they still are far from the Moon? Is it because Earth and the Moon are further away from each other than they were in Apollo 13 setting?

  5. This shit right here is why we should be funding NASA way more than what we currently are doing.

A massive step forward for humanity.

And yet, a guy I know still denies the initial moon landing, and is claiming everything we’re seeing is AI slop.

  7. Been watching NASA’s youtube stream the last half hour or so, is very cool.
Now I’m just looking forward to the newest earthrise pictures from this endeavour. As far as I can tell they’ve just been taken. Whoever we’re hearing on the stream quoted *’amaze, amaze, amaze’* when one of the astronauts said he’d caught it on the wide angle camera.

I love humanity. Despite everything we’ve been through, look at how far we’ve come.

Feels unreal to be watching the greatest explorers of all time do their thing

Does this mean that the Moon is pulling away faster than we originally thought
